Snowbirds: which home counts
A lot of people keep a home up north and spend the winter in Florida. The plan does not have a special snowbird rate. It uses one test: where is the legal residence, and did the person die 75 miles or more from that place?
Legal residence is the full-time home. If someone lives in Florida for 180 days or more in the year before they die, Florida can count as the legal residence even if the paperwork still shows a northern address. In that case, dying in Florida would not be “away from home.” Dying on a trip back north, or on a cruise, still could be.
If you buy the plan while you are away from that home, it does not start until you go back and then travel again.
